Monaghan Co Council has been approved €5 million in funding to repair flood-damaged roads.

The money comes from a €106 million national package announced by Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe in January, and follows liaison on needs assessment between the Co Council roads section and officials of the Dept of Transport.

Cavan Co Council gets €2.6 million from the same source.

In a statement welcoming the announcement, outgoing Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Cavan/Monaghan Fine Gael TD Heather Humphreys said the additional funding would help local authorities in the constituency repair and address the damage caused to local roads as a result of flooding in December and January.

In an election-accented commentary Minister Humphreys added: “It is only thanks to the economic recovery that we have been in a position to allocate extra money to deal with the problems caused by the recent flooding.

“I know that officials in Monaghan and Cavan Co Councils have been working with the Dept of Transport on the need for this funding, and I am sure they will be putting it to use without delay.

“Minister Donohoe says he believes the allocations will be sufficient to repair all of damage caused to local and regional roads and to allow for significant preventative works to be carried out to ward against recurrence in the future.”
