Players have stomach for battle to win silverware

Several Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Finals took place last Friday night and amid very challenging weather conditions at each venue, all games went down to the wire. Two of the games had two-point winning margins, while another was a one-point game and the other went all the way to extra-time.

A purple patch either side of the second-half water break pushed Latton towards a narrow win over Scotstown in the Division 1A Final in Emyvale. Darren McElroy opened the scoring for Latton in the fifth minute, with Jason Carey quickly responding for Scotstown. The teams could muster up just a single point in the following 20 minutes: a Darragh Dempsey just before the water break. The second quarter almost passed scoreless until Dempsey converted an addedtime free to leave Latton 0-3 to 0- 1 up in a rare half-time scoreline. A Mícheál McCarville free ended Scotstown’s lengthy drought after the restart and they were soon level through Ruairí Sheehan, only for Kevin Fitzpatrick to regain a narrow lead for Latton. A brace by McCarville edged Scotstown ahead for the first time and they appeared to have some momentum at that stage, but Latton rallied strongly, as Fitzpatrick, Damien Duffy and Dempsey moved them 0-7 to 0-5 ahead going into the final quarter.
