EirGrid was accused at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council by Sinn Féin’s Pat Treanor of exhibiting “reckless risk” in pressing ahead with plans to construct its north-south interconnector project while a legal challenge to the development in Northern Ireland was pending and public opposition to the overgrounding of the interconnector remained unremitting. The Council’s monthly discussion of the interconnector issue again saw political tensions rise to the surface between the Sinn Féin councillors and those of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael after Fianna Fáil’s Seamus Coyle accused Sinn Féin of an abrogation of responsibility by failing to more vigorously challenge at Assembly level in Northern Ireland the decision by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon to grant planning permission to the project there.
