GRASS-CUTTING AND PLANTING CHANGES ON THE WAY AS LOCAL AUTHORITY DOES ITS BIT TO SAVE THE BEE!

The vital need to preserve the Irish bee population in order to prevent serious disruption of the ecosystem will see changes of policy with regard to grass-cutting and flower-planting by the local authority in Monaghan, the members of the Monaghan Municipal District were informed at their monthly meeting on Monday.

While there was an assurance that green spaces in housing estates used by children as play facilities would be kept trimmed and maintained, grass will be allowed to grow at other open spaces within the local authority’s control in order to encourage the growth of nectar- bearing plants which provide food for bees and other insects that play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem.

And there will be a move away from adorning streetscapes with hanging baskets – which customarily are comprised of flowers…
