FORMER GUARDSMAN CHARGED OVER KILLING OF AIDAN MCANESPIE

A former British soldier is to stand trial accused of manslaughter over the killing of Aidan McAnespie at a border checkpoint in Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone, in February 1988. 23 year-old Mr McAnespie, who worked at the time at Monaghan Poultry Products, had been walking past the army sangar (watchtower) on his way to a GAA match at Aghaloo O’Neills GFC when he was hit by one of three bullets fired from a heavy machine gun.

David Jonathan Holden, a former Grenadier Guardsman, was 18 at the time of the shooting. Mr Holden, whose address was given as his lawyer’s office in Victoria Street, Belfast, appeared at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court yesterday. He had previously been charged with manslaughter, but the charge….
