2015 sees Glaslough Tidy Towns celebrate fifty years in existence which is a truly historic milestone for this community based organisation. While Glaslough awaits the results of the National Tidy Towns Competition for 2015, which will be announced September 28th, Tidy Town’s volunteers in the North Monaghan village are very busy planning their Jubilee Celebrations. To mark this occasion, Glaslough Tidy Towns are holding a celebratory night in the Oakland Centre in Glaslough this coming Saturday night September 19th.
The committee, which is one of the busiest and most successful in years has every reason to celebrate. Over the half century since its formation in 1965 the committee has grown from strength to strength and the work and projects undertaken by the Tidy Towns group have had a major positive impact on the way of life for residents in Glaslough and for the many visitors who come to the village each year.
Having won the overall coveted award in 1978 Glaslough to this day still remains the only town or village in County Monaghan to have ever won the prestigious National Tidy Towns Title and the committee is continually striving to reclaim the National Title once more.
As the current Gold Medal Winners and holders of the County Award since 2009 the committee have achieved many accolades during the past 50 years. Some of these include being Pride of Place runners up in 2011, nominated for the Ireland’s Best Kept Village in 2013, Winners of the National Tree Council Award in 2013, and winners of a National award for Sustainable Development in 2009 and these are just some of the awards received over the years.
Over the past 10 years Glaslough Tidy Towns have been involved in many of the environmental and heritage themed improvement projects in the village. Among these projects include the reconstruction of the old Railway Signal Cabin and track, the installation of the old railway gates, the development of new community, biodiversity and butterfly gardens, renewal of the historic horse pond on the Barrack Hill and the development of the biodiversity garden and polytunnel at St Mary’s …
