A delay in the expected completion date of the restoration of the car-parking area at the site of the discontinued development project in the centre of Monaghan Town – the location of which has been locally dubbed “the hole in the ground” – was communicated to the members of Monaghan Town Council on Monday night.
Town Manager David Fallon told the meeting that the original timeline for the works was programmed to finish by early March. The Town Engineer had met the developer, who had now put in a revised programme with a completion date of June 7.
Mr Fallon said the developer had been asked for an explanation of the delay. The Council did not have a full explanation as yet.
“The chain will not be around my neck when they are cutting the ribbon,” Council Cathaoirleach Seamus Treanor remarked.
Donal Sherry asked if there was any possibility that the works would not be completed in June.
The Manager said he was not expecting anything else, unless he was told otherwise.
Mr Fallon agreed with the members that the delay was “disappointing”.
