LOCAL ELECTION CONFUSION? – PUBLIC UNAWARE OF BOUNDARY CHANGES AND TOWN COUNCIL ABOLITION AS MAY 23 POLL LOOMS, MEETING TOLD

There was still considerable confusion among the general public in Co Monaghan over electoral boundary changes that will apply in the forthcoming local government elections on Friday, May 23, a meeting of Monaghan Co Council was told on Friday.

Some people were also unaware that the elections would see the abolition of Town Councils, and that they would be voting representatives onto three Municipal Districts – North Monaghan, Carrickmacross / Castleblayney and Clones / Ballybay – that would make up a newly restructured, 18-member Co Council, some councillors claimed at the meeting.

The context for the comments was a briefing on the implications for local government administration in Co Monaghan of the new 2014 Act, delivered by the Co Council’s Director of Governance & Corporate Affairs Adge King (see separate report inside this week).
