The importance of shopping local to bolster the economy and safeguard employment was emphasised by the Cathaoirleach of the Monaghan Municipal District, Sinn Féin councillor Cathy Bennett this week. Councillor Bennett called on shoppers to exercise a local preference during the Christmas holiday season at Monday’s Municipal District meeting when she paid tribute to the efforts that had been made to generate seasonal atmosphere and festive cheer in the county’s capital town.

The MD Cathaoirleach reflected on the success of the recent switch-on of the town’s Christmas lighting display and praised the organisation of the Christmas Street Food Festival which took place on Saturday December 2. She also congratulated Crocus on the events they had staged in the town the previous weekend, and reflected on the success of the Monaghan Business Awards staged in the Hillgrove Hotel on Thursday November 23 and sponsored by the Municipal District. The Cathaoirleach pointed out that free parking would operate in the town after 12 noon each day until January 1.

The meeting also urged shoppers and businesses to maximise their use of the Monaghan Town Voucher Scheme in the weeks ahead. The meeting was informed that sales of the voucher in November had amounted to €262,550. Redemptions for the month were €36,130.
