Important refurbishment and conservation work planned for St Macartan’s Cathedral in Monaghan Town received funding of €100,000 this week. The Government’s Historic Structures Fund will assist in the works, which will entail work to the spire, pinnacles tower and south transept of the cathedral, with internal high-level plaster repairs.
Two other places of worship in the local area have also been successful with applications to the fund. Shanco Church in Emyvale gets funding of €35,000 for conservation works to the roof, for the removal of vegetation and biocide cleaning, and conservation repairs to the stone structure, including lime mortar repairs to stonework.
€30,600 is being allocated to St John the Evangelist Church, Dartrey for roof repairs. In all, 95 heritage projects across the country will benefit from a total of €4.5 million. Minister of State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan TD said the funding would provide a welcome boost to local construction and heritage trades, generating more employment for specialist heritage roles such as thatching and stone work.
