A warning to the public to ensure that their homes were secured before attending Mass emanated from Co Monaghan Joint Policing Committee on Tuesday. Garda Superintendent Pat O’Connell told a meeting of the JPC at the M:TEK building in Knockaconny that some recent burglaries in the Monaghan area had occurred while people were out at Mass and it appeared that houses, particularly those of elderly people, were being targeted by criminals at these times. Referring to recent incidents in the Clontibret area, Superintendent O’Connell called on the public to make sure they secured their premises while attending Mass.
“Unfortunately some premises that were the subject of recent robberies were left unsecured,” the Superintendent pointed out. He also advised the public to report unusual activity or vehicles foreign to their area to the Gardaí.
“We will be stepping up our patrols in areas at Mass times going forward,” Superintendent O’Connell stated. He said that doors and windows should be locked when people were out of their homes to make it as difficult as possible for criminals to break in.
