STRONG MONAGHAN SUPPORT FOR ENOUGH IS ENOUGH A5 CAMPAIGN

Strong Co Monaghan representation and support was evident at the Tyrone GAA Centre in Garvaghey on Monday evening for the launch of the Enough is Enough campaign initiated to advance the construction of the long-promised dual carriageway road liking Aughnacloy with Derry. Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Co Council Seán Conlon and his Co Council colleagues Brian McKenna and Paudge Connolly joined hundreds of people at an event which graphically conveyed the tragic human impact of the 44 lives lost on the existing roadway since the A5 was first identified as a priority project by the Northern Ireland Executive in 2007.

The Tyrone Co GAA Board are the prime movers in the campaign, motivated by the deaths on the road of many people with GAA associations, among them 21-year-old John Rafferty from Kiltyclogher who was killed in an accident on the A5 last October and who played for his county at Minor and U-21 levels. Three other young GAA members – Petey McNamee, Nathan Corrigan and Peter Finnegan -passed away just 150 yards from the entrance to the Garvaghey complex, the equivalent of Co Monaghan’s Cloghan centre of excellence, in another fatal road accident.
