AUGHEY SEEKS REVIVAL OF MONAGHAN RELIEF ROAD PROJECT AS TRAFFIC CONGESTION ESCALATES

Cathaoirleach Raymond Aughey moved at Tuesday’s meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District to revive discussions on the provision of a major relief road development that would address mounting traffic congestion problems in the Monaghan area. A relief road scheme was brought to an advanced stage by the local authority almost 20 years ago but agreement on the proposed route was unable to be reached and the project fell into abeyance.

At Tuesday’s MD meeting in Ballinode, the Fianna Fáil local public representative successfully moved a motion asking that the Roads Section of Monaghan Co Council come up with a relief road plan and enter into discussions with Transport Infrastructure Ireland in relation to its advancement. Councillor Aughey referred to the consistent traffic congestion difficulties encountered by motorists using Monaghan Town’s Clones Road and expressed the view that an outer relief or ring road was needed as the N54 had become one of the county’s busiest roads. He asked that the possibility of having an outer or inner relief road that would link the Clones Road to the N2 be investigated.
