The refurbished Doohamlet Community Centre – officially opened by Cavan/Monaghan TD and Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys on Friday last – has been cited as a national example of sustainable best practice in energy efficiency. “The centre showcases the energy improvements which can be undertaken in other community buildings – the measures installed can also be applied in domestic settings,” the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, who gave grant assistance to the extensive redevelopment of the community facility along with SSE Airtricity, has stated.
The SEAI said the measures introduced – which include heat pumps, LED lighting, a heating control system and window, door and roof replacement – have made the building more cost-effective to run. “The building is also more sustainable, with better energy credentials. The modern heating control system allows the users of the community centre to plan energy usage and ensure energy is not wasted.” The regeneration of the building received €500,000 backing from the LEADER programme and funding from the Sports Capital Programme, Monaghan Co Council and Foras na Gaeilge was also accessed, supplemented by an extensive and sustained community fund-raising…
