There has been widespread condemnation of the vandalism of one of the Rossmore Giants statues that grace the popular Monaghan Town forest amenity. Gardaí are investigating the extensive malicious damage caused to the structure and have asked Rossmore Forest Park users who might have information that could identify the culprits to contact them on 047 77240. The sculpture, known as Spike and located close to the former site of Rossmore Castle in the centre of the park, had its head and body significantly damaged in the incident. Spike is one of a number of Drumlin Giants erected at scenic locations in the park in an initiative by artist Marc Kelly and storyteller Paul Bond. Work on the Giants Trail project started in 2018. It is planned to have ten Giants put in place in the park, linked to each other by a folkloric narrative. It is understood that works to repair the damaged structure are due to commence shortly.
