‘SHE WILL BE HEARD’ — THE MOVIE STARRING COUNCILLOR AOIFE MCCOOEY

The premiere is planned in Brussels, but The Northern Standard are told that there’ll be a screening in ‘Blayney too, as town native Councillor Aoife Mc- Cooey is one of three women featuring in a documentary about European politics. The Fianna Fáil representative is also the only elected representative featured in the documentary commissioned by the Alliance of Liberal Democrats Europe (ALDE). ALDE is the larger grouping Fianna Fáil forms part of, at European level. Councillor Mc- Cooey represents the party on Monaghan County Council and Carrickmacross/Castleblayney Municipal District.

Aoife is a member of the European Women’s Academy, recently renamed ‘The Alliance of Her,’ which is all about female empowerment. Currently, Aoife in her final year at Dublin City University studying to become a secondary school teacher, her specialist subjects are English and a relatively new subject at second level, Politics and Society. She also has to find the time to fit in work placement as part of her course.

For the past year, Aoife who sees herself as a representative of youth, did her work placements in Coláiste Chú Chulainn, where Tomás Sharkey is Principal. Principal Sharkey is an elected representative on Louth County Council himself, and Councillor McCooey was delighted that he understood the demands of being a public representative, needing time off for meetings etc. Aside from that, she doesn’t have much free time, because councillors are expected to accept placements on committees, as well as getting actively…
