CENSUS REVEALS 5.6% INCREASE IN CO MONAGHAN POPULATION

Co Monaghan’s population has risen by 5.6% over the last six years, preliminary results from Census 2022 have disclosed. The county’s population on April 3 this year was recorded at 64,832, comprising 32,171 females and 32,661 males, an increase of 3,446 since 2016. The natural increase of births minus deaths was 2,093, with the remaining increase of 1,353 attributed to net inward migration.

The total housing stock in Co Monaghan in April 2022 was 26,548. This shows an increase of 1,237 (+4.9%) since 2016. There were 2,873 vacant dwellings, which was 11 fewer than in 2016 (-0.4%). This does not include holiday homes, of which there were 228. The national population on April 3 2022 was recorded at 5.1 million, the highest population in a Census since 1841. All counties in the State have experienced a population growth. In the six years between Census 2016 and Census 2022, there was net inward migration of more than 190,000, while the national housing stock rose by 6% to 2.1 million.
