A vivid picture of how the Active Travel initiative being implemented by the local authority in the North Monaghan area was transforming the local landscape for pedestrians and cyclists was presented at Monday’s meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District. Outlining the Active Travel Schemes that were underway in the Monaghan Municipal District area, Senior Executive Engineer for Roads Kevin West said that Monaghan Co Council had received €2.5 million from the National Transport Authority for Active Travel projects throughout the county in 2022.
Mr West remarked that there seemed to be plenty of funding available from the NTA to complete these projects in their entirety. He said there would be a 4.5 kilometre upgrade of the Monaghan Town Greenway comprising sections from the Coolshannagh Roundabout to Old Cross Square, Old Cross Square and Glen Road including the Mall Road, and from Glen Road out to the Threemilehouse junction.
This would involve widening of the footpath and resurfacing, as well as new fencing, lighting, additional seating and signage. “The greenway will be closed for a fourweek period between Coolshannagh and Old Cross Square for the works to be completed,” Mr West pointed out. The work would start towards the end of this month. There would also be improvements to the existing cycling infrastructure from Old Cross Square to Glen Road.
“We are looking at this section to see how we can improve safety and there will be segregation between cyclists and traffic,” the engineer stated. He pointed out that works had also commenced at the Ulster Canal Park under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. They were cleaning out the canal, carrying out planting and putting in new fencing as well as upgrading the street lighting and this work would be completed by mid-June.
