Michael Fisher There has been a steady decline in the number of Covid cases in Monaghan, according to the latest data released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC). Since the cyber attack on the HSE’s IT systems last month, the release of detailed statistics by the Department of Health has been suspended. In the last such report before the HSE system collapsed, the data revealed that in Co. Monaghan on Wednesday May 12th, the Covid incidence rate per 100,000 population over 14 days was up, at 110.8 (below the national average of 129.3).
The rate put the county in ninth place in the table of 26 Counties. At midnight on 12th May the total number of cases in the county since the start of the pandemic was 5082 (national total 254,013). In recent days, the HPSC has compiled figures for each county, based on the number of confirmed cases uploaded daily to the HSE’s Covid tracker app, which has remained operational. The data must therefore be treated with some caution as the table is not compiled in the same way as previously.
The figures indicate that there has been a steady decline in Covid cases in Co. Monaghan in recent weeks, but what will be interesting to see is whether this trend is matched in the number of cases reported through GPs. Instead of topping the table of 26 counties in the Republic for the level of cases per 100,000 of population, Monaghan is now in the healthy position of being the second lowest rate in the State, with only Sligo in a better position, according to the HPSC table.
