Call on Co Council to explore possibility of Shirley estate development as public amenity

Sinn Féin local public representative Colm Cathy has called on Monaghan Co Council to explore whether the Lough Fea estate in South Monaghan, closely associated with the Shirley family, could be developed as a public amenity. Councillor Carthy, the current Cathaoirleach of the Council, after praising the recent development work which had taken place under the aegis of the local authority at Rossmore Forest Park in Monaghan Town, asked at Monday’s Council meeting if there had ever been any pro-activity in trying to make similar use of the Lough Fea or Shirley estate in the south of the county.

He referred to the rich heritage and natural amenity value of the area, and urged the Council to consider entering discussions with Coillte or JES Holdings, the current owners of the site, to develop it into a public amenity. “We should be looking at opening Lough Fea up to the people of South Monaghan and to visitors,” the Cathaoirleach stated, referring to the presence of Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s Chair and an important Celtic cross and cave system.
