While parades and other traditional St Patrick’s Day celebrations had to be foregone this year due to the prevailing Covid-19 restrictions, yesterday’s feast of the national apostle was marked in a number of colourful and eventful ways. One was the illumination of the Monaghan Courthouse building in green hues and Celtic motifs as part of the national Solas: Awakening Ireland project directed by Luke Leslie.
The illumination films were on view from March 12-17 on the SPV TV channel. Other locations featured included the Mansion House in Dublin, Trim Castle in Meath, Powerscourt Waterfall in Wicklow, Athenry Castle in Galway and Grianán of Aileach in Donegal.
“These iconic locations and buildings will be illuminated with projections of reimagined, contemporary Irish imagery such as Ogham lettering, phrases and typography,” said the project organisers. “The displays will be captured on film and set to a specially commissioned spoken word performance and music composition, which calls on the nation to remain hopeful through these challenging times.”
