CO COUNCIL APOLOGIES FOR SUFFERING AND MISTREATMENT OF RESIDENTS IN CO MONAGHAN MOTHER AND BABY FACILITIES

Monaghan Co Council delivered an apology on Monday to those who might have endured suffering and mistreatment in mother and baby facilities in Co Monaghan that in the past came within the responsibility of the local authority to provide and oversee. The apology came in a statement read by Cathaoirleach, Councillor Colm Carthy of Sinn Féin, at the commencement of the February meeting of the Council, which was held online in adherence to Covid-19 restrictions.

Monaghan Co Council, as a public assistance authority, had responsibility for unmarried mothers and their children and the operation of the County Home in Castleblayney until 1970. The reading of the statement was followed by a moment of silence and a five-minute adjournment as a mark of respect. No debate or contributions from the members were taken.

Issues raised in relation to this approach by Independent councillor Paudge Connolly were dealt with in a brief in-committee discussion which took place after the statement was read.
