National media spotlight on An Taisce report didn’t reflect expenditure
and plans for Market House and Hope Castle says O’Sullivan
Weekend national media coverage of the listing by An Taisce of Castleblayney’s Hope Castle and Market House as two of the country’s most endangered historic buildings did not reflect the levels of investment in their preservation made by Monaghan Co Council, or the local authority’s plans to restore both structures to productive future use. This was stated by Chief Executive Eamonn O’Sullivan at Monday’s meeting of the Council when an extensive outline of future proposals in relation to the buildings was presented.
On July 10 An Taisce, the Irish National Trust, which describes itself as a charity that works to preserve and protect Ireland’s natural and built heritage, published a list of what is considered to be the Top 10 most-at-risk buildings of importance in the country at the present time. Hope Castle and the Market House in Castleblayney were coupled and placed at the top of the published list, although An Taisce stressed that buildings were listed “in no particular order”.
