JPC TO TAKE CAMPAIGN ACTION AFTER LORRY DRIVERS FOUND TO BE DRUG DRIVING

Peter Hughes Co Monaghan Joint Policing Committee decided on Tuesday to launch an information campaign on the dangers of driving while under the influence of drugs after being informed that midmorning Garda checkpoints had found that three lorry drivers – one in Co Monaghan and two in Co Cavan – were driving their vehicles with traces of illegal drugs still in their systems.

A campaign to convey the message that illegal drugs such as cannabis can remain in one’s system for up to 30 days was advocated by the Chairperson of the Monaghan Town Team Alan Johnston and strongly endorsed by Garda Chief Superintendent John O’Reilly.

The issue of drug driving was also commented upon by the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, who was present at the meeting to brief the JPC on the roll-out of the new operational model for An Garda Síochána that will see Monaghan and Cavan join with Co Louth in a new Garda Division to be headquartered in…
