SADNESS at the tragic death of Republic of Ireland fan David Clerkin in Copenhagen at the weekend was shared by many people in Monaghan along with people in his native Co Louth and throughout the country. It’s understood that Mr Clerkin, who came from the Beamore area of Drogheda, had close family connections in the Monaghan town area. The 30-year-old is believed to have fallen into the water in the Havnegade area of Copenhagen Harbour, where his body was found at about 10.30am on Sunday.

The regular traveller to home and away games had been one of many Irish supporters who were in the city for the Ireland-Denmark Nations League fixture on Monday evening. The FAI said it was “deeply saddened” at what happened, and tributes were also paid to David by his local club Drogheda United and by Duleek AFC where he played as a schoolboy. Players from both teams wore black armbands and observed a minute’s silence at Monday’s match, while the Department of Foreign Affairs has been providing consular assistance to Mr Clerkin’s family in the wake of Sunday’s tragic event.
