• Councillor Treanor accepts Chief Executive’s assurances

Independent councillor Seamus Treanor agreed to withdraw a motion at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council after expressing satisfaction with assurances from Chief Executive Eamonn O’Sullivan that there would be no cost to the ratepayers of the county from the project that will see 20 Syrian refugee families resettled in Monaghan next year.

Mr O’Sullivan said that the Dept of Justice would bear the cost of the resettlement, and there would be no implications from the project for commercial rates or the household charge levied by the local authority. In addition to his motion – which read: “That Monaghan Co Council rejects the demand by the Dept of Justice and Equality to home 90 asylum seekers without funding from central government” – Councillor Treanor had two questions…
