LOCAL BUSINESSMAN EXPRESSED DISMAY AS ULSTER BANK SHUTS DOWN IN COOTEHILL

ULSTER BANK severed its local branch link with Cootehill in decisive fashion on Friday last, its last working day in the town, when all signage was removed from the long-serving Market Street building without any pomp or ceremony, as our photographs show.

The closure brings to an end the bank’s 180-year link with the town, where it had set up one of its first eight branches on the island of Ireland in 1837, according to Wikipedia. The decision by Ulster Bank to cease operations in the Cootehill branch had been met with strong disapproval among its customer base and the local business and retail sector in particular when it was first announced in March….
