FINE GAEL RULES OUT COALITION WITH SINN FÉIN

“Sinn Féin and Fine Gael are like oil and water, they don’t mix; they’re incompatible”. Those were the views of the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys T.D., at the weekend when questioned about a possible future coalition between the two parties.

The Sinn Féin President and Louth T.D. Gerry Adams said there was no possibility of his party propping up a Fine Gael government. Mr Adams said Fine Gael should stop getting into a tizzy, as Sinn Féin would not support them given what he called their disastrous policies. He said that bolstering the “right wing, regressive policies” of Fine Gael was now the role that Fianna Fáil had taken on. Mr Adams added: “the Taoiseach should stop flip-flopping. I would like to help calm Fine Gael down.”

Speculation was heightened in the national media on Thursday when the Taoiseach gave a briefing to the media. Enda Kenny T.D. was asked about comments by Sinn Féin’s deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald T.D. that she now wanted to be in government and a “conversation” needed to be had between now and the next election.
